How to Care for a Wool Rug: Everyday Cleaning and Spill First Aid

Wool rug care depends on more than the fiber name. Dyes, backing, fringe, construction, and the condition of an older rug all affect the safest approach. Start with the care information for your individual rug, and ask for advice if it is incomplete.

Everyday care: start gently

Vacuum gently with a smooth attachment and avoid a rotating brush that could catch the pile or fringe. Keep fringe and edges clear of the vacuum head. Rotate the rug occasionally to help distribute wear, and use a rug pad suitable for your flooring where extra grip is needed.

A flatwoven kilim and a piled Moroccan rug have different structures. Do not assume that a cleaning method suitable for one is automatically right for the other. Our guide to rug materials and construction explains which details to check.

What to do immediately after a spill

  1. Lift any solid material carefully. Avoid pushing it farther into the fibers.
  2. Blot liquid with a clean, white absorbent cloth. Press gently rather than rubbing or scrubbing.
  3. Work from the edge toward the center. Use a clean area of the cloth as it absorbs the spill.
  4. Avoid soaking the rug. Excess moisture can reach parts of the rug that are difficult to dry safely.

These first steps do not guarantee that a stain will disappear. If dye transfers to the cloth, the texture changes, or you do not know what caused the stain, stop and seek specialist advice.

Check a cleaner before using it

Use only a product appropriate for wool and compatible with your rug's care instructions. Follow the cleaner's directions and test a small, hidden area first. Where the instructions allow spot cleaning, apply a small amount to a cloth instead of pouring it directly onto the rug.

Do not assume that a household remedy is safe because it is described as natural. Avoid improvising with mixtures when you do not know how the rug's fibers and dyes will respond.

When to contact a rug-cleaning specialist

Get professional advice for large stains, dye bleeding, delicate or worn areas, or a rug that needs deep cleaning. Choose someone who can assess the rug's fibers, dyes, and construction. Tell them what was spilled and which products you have already used.

The independent WoolSafe carpet and rug care guide provides further care resources. Its Stain Wizard offers guidance organized by spill type. Neither replaces the instructions or an assessment for your particular rug.

Common wool rug care questions

Can I put a wool rug in a washing machine?

Only if the care instructions for that specific rug explicitly allow it. A wool label alone does not mean the rug is machine washable.

Does wool mean a rug is stainproof?

No. A wool rug can still stain, and its dyes and construction may need careful handling. Deal with spills promptly without aggressive rubbing or saturation.

How can TISLIT help with a care question?

Send us the product link and a clear photo, together with a description of the issue. For an existing stain, include what caused it if known and anything already applied to the area.
