How to Choose a Rug: Size, Color, and Style for Your Room

The right rug should fit both your room and the way you use it. Start with the furniture layout, compare color and construction, and then decide whether a fixed-size piece or a custom rug best suits the space.

1. Plan the size around your furniture

Measure the area you want the rug to cover and mark it with painter's tape. In a living room, test a layout with the front sofa and chair legs on the rug. If you prefer all furniture legs inside the outline, measure the entire seating group.

Under a dining table, test the chairs pulled back as well as tucked in. About 24–28 inches (60–70 cm) beyond the table edge can be a starting point, but the actual chairs and room determine the clearance required. Check doors and walkways before deciding.

Use our rug size guide to compare common U.S. reference sizes with centimeters. Handmade and vintage pieces do not necessarily match standard 5 × 8 ft, 8 × 10 ft, or 9 × 12 ft formats.

2. Compare colors in daylight and evening light

Look at the rug alongside your sofa, flooring, walls, and artwork. Cream and other neutral tones can create a quieter palette; a strong red, green, or patterned rug can become a focal point. Consider whether you want the rug to repeat a room color or introduce a new one.

Review the original product photographs and close-ups. Screen settings and lighting affect color appearance. Images identified as AI-generated room inspiration illustrate a possible setting; use the original rug photographs to assess the offered piece.

3. Choose a construction that works in the space

Compare flatwoven kilim rugs with Moroccan rugs and Afghan rugs. Check the individual listing for material, pile, and construction. The words “modern” or “traditional” describe appearance, not a complete material specification.

Allow for the rug and pad beneath doors, and check how chairs move across the edge. For abstract, geometric, or striped designs, explore our modern rugs and compare the actual product details.

4. Compare real examples, using their exact dimensions

These individual pieces illustrate different palettes and proportions. Availability can change; check the product page for the current status.

ExampleListed dimensionsApproximate U.S. dimensions
Pastel vintage Moroccan rug with abstract motifs180 × 100 cm5 ft 11 in × 3 ft 3 in
Earth tone kilim with large diamonds199 × 147 cm6 ft 6 in × 4 ft 10 in
Green kilim with fine stripes291 × 241 cm9 ft 7 in × 7 ft 11 in
Red Berjasta rug with light horizontal lines416 × 316 cm13 ft 8 in × 10 ft 4 in

Feet and inches are rounded conversions. Use the original centimeter measurements to mark the outline in your room, especially where a close fit matters.

5. Decide between an individual piece and a custom order

An individual vintage rug or kilim has a fixed size. A custom Moroccan rug lets you select the offered width, length, and fringe options. Discuss other dimensions or design changes before ordering, and ask for the current production and shipping estimate.

Standard shipping is included in the U.S. price. Any applicable import duties, import taxes, and related carrier fees are paid separately by the recipient. Review our U.S. shipping information and return policy before buying.
